ABOUT FLYING CLOUD

Flying Cloud Winery was founded in 2003 by Stephen and Paula Dooley with a shared vision: to produce high-quality wines that are not only price accessible but also beautifully food-friendly. With his deep-rooted passion for winemaking, Stephen recognized the opportunity to create wines that capture the best of the Paso Robles and SLO Coast regions while offering a unique twist on the traditional Bordeaux varieties.

At Flying Cloud, Stephen focuses on crafting wines from nearby Paso Robles, known for its exceptional Bordeaux varieties, and Sauvignon Blanc from the cool climate SLO Coast.

This new venture allowed him to explore a range of varietals not included under the Stephen Ross Wine Cellars label, bringing fresh, exciting options to wine enthusiasts.

The name “Flying Cloud” holds deep personal meaning for both Stephen and Paula. For Stephen, it’s a heartfelt tribute to his roots in Mankato, Minnesota, where he grew up. The name evokes a sense of home, a grounding connection that spans both time and place.

Specifically, it honors the Flying Cloud Airport in nearby Eden Prairie, Minnesota, where Stephen commonly flew with his dad, a private pilot. In addition to its personal significance, the name “Flying Cloud” carries cultural and historical importance through its reference to Indigenous lore, as the airport itself was named in honor of Native American heritage.

For Paula, the name is nostalgic to her previous career in aviation finance, where she gained a deep appreciation for the artistry and precision of flight. It’s a beautiful blend of both their stories – a nod to Paula’s aviation background and a tribute to Stephen’s Midwestern upbringing.

In every bottle of Flying Cloud wine, you’ll taste the craftsmanship, care, and history that Stephen and Paula have poured into their work. It’s a reflection of their journey, their values, and their connection to both the land and each other. From the first vine to the final pour, Flying Cloud Winery is dedicated to making wines that are not just for the connoisseur, but for anyone who loves to share a good glass with good food and good company.
